First Visit Guide

Doctor In Consultation

A Message From Dr. Haupt

Listening to your story (the “interview”) and my clinical exam are the two most critical elements of patient care. Expect the first half of the visit to be focused on these. I want my own exam and to hear directly from you about your story.  While I’m happy to review other physician’s records and view them in the context of your story - I make up my own mind based on what I’m seeing and hearing from you - the patient. We will do a detailed review of the other information you already have like imaging and test results that are pertinent. We will discuss your goals.

The second half of the visit will be explaining your diagnosis (or the steps we need to take to arrive at the specific diagnosis), and a comprehensive discussion of treatment options to achieve your goals.  The patient (You!) dictate the direction we go. My role is to help you decide once you understand the options.

1. Define Your Visit Goals

Before your appointment, take a moment to think about the primary reason for your visit and what you hope to achieve. Whether you are recovering from an injury, managing longstanding symptoms, or seeking treatment for chronic discomfort, having a clear objective will help us tailor your care plan.

2. Describe Your Symptoms

A thorough understanding of your symptoms and medical history allows us to provide the best possible care. To prepare, consider the following questions:

  • When did your symptoms begin?
    • Was there a specific injury, or did they develop gradually?

  • Do the symptoms occur constantly or only with activity?

  • If you have pain, where is it located and how severe is it (0–10 scale)?

  • Have your symptoms improved, worsened, or remained the same recently?

  • What activities are most important to you (work, exercise, sports, hobbies)?

  • How have your symptoms affected your ability to participate in these activities?

3. Compile Your Treatment History

Many patients referred to our practice have received prior treatment. Please bring any records relevant to your orthopedic condition, including:

  • Medications you have used

  • Previous injections (type, location, and date)

  • Physical therapy history (duration and type)

  • If you have had prior surgery, please bring your operative report and any arthroscopic images

4. Bring Prior Imaging

If you have had imaging performed on the affected area, please request:

  • The imaging reports, and

  • The actual images on a CD

This includes X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans.
If new imaging is required, we may obtain it at Mayo Clinic on the day of your visit.
